Sandy HemingerSandy Heminger, quilting instructor and owner of A Piece In Time, is available to teach or lecture to your group.
Lectures with Trunk Shows: Log Cabins Then and Now Discover some of the interesting history of America’s own -- the Log Cabin block. Learn how the construction of the block has come full circle over the decades and enjoy the endless design possibilities as you plan your own Log Cabin projects. Scrap Control! Is your fabric stash threatening to take over every drawer, basket, closet and room in your house? It’s probably time to develop a game plan to get those scraps under control, once and for all. We will share our short-term solutions (everyone has funny one) and plan for productive quiltmaking as we reclaim our lives in order to produce wonderful, beautiful scrap quilts. BBBB: Borders, Batting, Backing and Binding Learn all the secrets of applying borders, fitting backings, selecting the right batting and applying binding to earn ribbons in competition. Perfect patchwork means little if these areas are deficient. This session is packed with useful information to help make your next quilt ‘Best of Show.’ Workshops: Who Needs Math Anyway? Triangles Made Easy Explore the nature of triangles in quiltmaking and learn several techniques that make the process ‘math-less’. Two quilts will be offered which both have many variations: Stars in the Mud, a connector block quilt, and Friendship Star, a quilt which utilizes any of several other triangle techniques. Feel comfortable with the process while you make either or both of these uniquely beautiful quilts. One Block Wonders In this class, we’ll explore many quilts that have been made by repeating just one block. Take one of Sandy’s magic blocks and manipulate it to create an exquisite quilt full of secondary designs that will sparkle. These complex-looking designs are unbelievably simple to create. An optional $10 handout packet is available to students to purchase in class. Drunkards Path: Cut No Curves, Piece No Curves If you cut no curves and piece no curves, how do you get a quilt made only of curves? Well, not only do you get the Drunkard’s Path blocks, you get them in less than half the time of conventional techniques. We will use the Gath-A-Round tool to do fast, easy sewing of this previously fussy block. Mock Hand Appliqué on your sewing machine will be covered in this fun class. Rotary Cut Miniature Crazy Quilt with Embellishments This project is an excellent way to use your scraps, embellish the seams with the fancy stitches on your sewing machine, play with specialty threads, learn all about stabilizers, and make a quilt -- all at the same time! Once you’ve mastered these techniques, you can apply them to quilted clothing and projects to decorate your home!
